One of the more interesting holistic health careers is that of the homeopath. Homeopathy operates on the theory that like cures like. When administering treatment, the homeopath introduces small amounts of substances to their client’s body that would produce symptoms or effects similar to those of the illness. These substances act in the same way that vaccinations work, stimulating the body into fighting the reaction.

When interviewing a client, homeopaths go extremely in-depth. They ask about any internal and external issues that may be contributing to the illness, and do a complete lifestyle profile. After analyzing this information, homeopaths will recommend any lifestyle changes (diet, exercise, etc.) and/or a homeopathic remedy. Because people react differently to different substances, further research would need to be done. Sometimes symptoms are straightforward, and the solution or cure is an obvious one, but other times the diagnosis may be more difficult and will require research about similar cases and their cures. It may take several treatments to cure an illness, or even to make any progress.

Most homeopaths work in clinics or private practices. They can set their own hours, but at times weekend and evening hours may be needed. They may also choose to practice in several different locations, and therefore would be doing much traveling. This along with frequent patient interaction may cause stress, and therefore homeopaths require a great deal of stamina, as well as the good observational and research skills needed to pinpoint illnesses and find cures.

The education requirements for homeopathy vary. They can range from a two-day seminar to a four year course of study. Often those who study homeopathy already have a medical degree, such as MD or DO, which allows them to practice medicine. Homeopathy is largely unregulated, but someone without a medical degree cannot legally offer cures if they don’t have a medical license. In all states, you cannot practice medicine without a license but you can advise people as long as you do not state or imply that you can diagnose or treat illness. Because of this, the income of a homeopath varies dependent upon their client base and ability to practice and distribute remedies within the law.
